Proposal Writing Apprenticeship Program

Goals

By the end of this 12-month time period, apprentices will be able to:

  • Evaluate the appropriateness of RFPs in terms of Excelsior programs and respond to leadership
  • Organize a strategic planning session for future funding opportunities
  • Organize and lead a proposal writing team
  • Identify and reach out to external partners
  • Complete the mechanics of applying online
  • Be able to lead a budget discussion and assist with developing a budget
  • Be ready to take the lead on writing a proposal at the end of the 12-month period.

Indicators of success

Evaluating the appropriateness of RFPs:  Trainers will guide apprentices through the process at least twice.  Each apprentice will evaluate at least 3 RFPs over the 12-month period.

Organizing a strategic planning session for future funding opportunities: Apprentices will participate in at least two trainer-led strategic planning sessions.  Each apprentice will be ready to organize and lead her/his own session by the end of the apprenticeship.

Organizing and leading a proposal writing team: Apprentices will participate in at least three trainer-led proposal writing teams. Each apprentice will be ready to organize and lead her own team by the end of the apprenticeship.

Identifying and reaching out to external partners: Apprentices will participate in cultivating external partners for at least two trainer-led proposal development projects.  Apprentices will team with trainers in reaching out to external partners for at least one proposal development project.  Apprentices will be ready to identify and reach out to external partners at the end of the apprenticeship.

Completing the mechanics of applying online: Explore where and how to download an application and its instructions, review existing, previously submitted application packages (federal and private).  Download and participate in the preparation of the next online submission.

Leading a budget discussion and assisting with developing a budget: Apprentices will participate in at least three trainer-led budget sessions. Each apprentice will be ready to hold her own budget session at the end of the apprenticeship.

Writing a proposal: Shadow one of the trainers through an entire proposal writing process at least once.  Apprentices will be asked to write different sections of proposal and to edit proposal over the course of the next 12 months. Apprentices will be ready to write a proposal at the end of the apprenticeship.
